A Glimpse

Angela Wei

A fish found

its way onto my hook.

I watched its scales

wink in the light, like sullen words.

The lullaby of its tail

sang into black threads,

and its eyes roved wild,

pearls seeking water.

It was a stroke flickering

in the muddy lake.

I bent my head

to catch the breath

falling from its gills,

and I heard nothing but

a depth like the last drop

of love.
